A Breeding Program for Farmed Fallow Deer

چکیده

There is increasing archaeological evidence that deer were being systematically cropped or “ranched” much earlier than has been previously supposed. In the Mediterranean region, fallow deer (Dama danm dama), made a sudden appearance on several islands at the same time as sheep, goats and pigs, and subsequently their bones make up 70 percent of those found at Neolithic sites between 6000 and 2000 B.C., suggesting that they may have been introduced for meat production. However, the resurgence of interest in the use of deer for intensive farming began in Scotland about 25 years ago and has developed to the highest level in New Zealand, where one million deer are now farmed. The predominant species being farmed in New Zealand is the red deer (Cervus elaphus) while for similar reasons of availability, European fallow deer are the predominant species being farmed in Australia. Fallow deer are the only deer species in Tasmania, being introduced early last century and now well established in a wild population estimated to be around 10,000 animals. In addition there are 7,000 fallow deer on deer farms and I shall confine my discussion to the breeding of fallow deer.

Persian fallow deer (Dama dama mesopotamica) is only found in a few protected and refuges areas in the northwest, north, and southwest of Iran. The aims of this study were analysis of inbreeding and morphometric parameters of semen in male Persian fallow deer to investigate the cause of reduced fertility of this endangered species in Dasht-e-Naz National Refuge, Sari, Iran. The Persian fallow d...

Pestivirus infections in cervids from the Czech Republic

372 sera of cervids from the Czech Republic were examined for antibodies to the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus (BDV) by competitive-inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and for the presence of the BVDV by AgELISA. Antibodies to BVDV/BDV were found in 0.6% (two positive/305 tested) red deer (Cervus elaphus). BVDV/BDV antibodies were not found in four...

Bovine Tuberculosis in a Nebraska Herd of Farmed Elk and Fallow Deer: A Failure of the Tuberculin Skin Test and Opportunities for Serodiagnosis

In 2009, Mycobacterium bovis infection was detected in a herd of 60 elk (Cervus elaphus) and 50 fallow deer (Dama dama) in Nebraska, USA. Upon depopulation of the herd, the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (TB) was estimated at ∼71-75%, based upon histopathology and culture results. Particularly with elk, gross lesions were often severe and extensive. One year ago, the majority of the elk had ...

Spatio-temporal trends and risk factors affecting West Nile virus and related flavivirus exposure in Spanish wild ruminants

BACKGROUND During the last decade, the spread of many flaviviruses (Genus Flavivirus) has been reported, representing an emerging threat for both animal and human health. To further study utility of wild ruminant samples in West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance, we assessed spatio-temporal trends and factors associated with WNV and cross-reacting flaviviruses exposure, particularly Usutu virus (US...

Context-Related Acoustic Variation in Male Fallow Deer (Dama dama) Groans

While social and behavioural contexts are known to affect the acoustic structure of vocal signals in several mammal species, few studies have investigated context-related acoustic variation during inter-sexual advertisement and/or intra-sexual competition. Here we recorded male fallow deer groans during the breeding season and investigated how key acoustic parameters (fundamental frequency and ...
